RAGNAROK

The Old Norse depicted the end of the world as a massive battle between the giants and the gods; the Æsir and the Vanir; utgaard and the inngaard. "Ragnarok" as it's known in Norwegian, was the ultimate reset button for life as we know it today.

In Netflix's third feature series from Norway (after Lillyhammer and Hjem til jul), the quiet, unsuspecting, fictional fjord town of Edda, Hordaland is about to be the epicenter of the next Norse battle for humanity. When an upstanding young man named Magne moves into town with his family, things start getting strange. He finds he has gained incredible strength, he no longer needs his glasses, and he has an incredible urge to save the earth from the toxic waste coming from the mysterious Jutul factories.

This course is perfect for those who like a challenging but forgiving space to spend time exploring spoken Norwegian. we'll review portions of the script each week, and we’ll read summaries of each episode with key words. We’ll also use the film to delve into some advanced grammar and usage in Norwegian.

Culturally, we’ll learn more together about environmental conservation in Norway and relevant Norse myths. Join us for an exciting show and a fun morning discussion.

UPPER INTERMEDIATE NORWEGIAN 1

This class is designed for students who are comfortable reading and communicating orally in Norwegian at a beginning/lower intermediate level, and who are serious about taking the next step in their Norwegian language learning journey.  Unlike other MNLCP classes, we will use Stein på stein, the primary curriculum used in Norway to build language competency among intermediate learners for whom Norwegian is not a first language, to guide learning.

Through weekly written assignments students will deepen their understanding of essential linguistic and cultural knowledge and also increase skills related to reading, speaking and listening.  Instruction is conducted primarily in Norwegian and will challenge students to demonstrate their learning both orally and through writing. This class is recommended for those who have completed Intermediate Norwegian 5 and above, or the equivalent and who are committed to spending time on their Norwegian studies outside of class.

Text: Stein på stein  textbook and workbook by Elisabeth Ellingsen and Kirsti Mac Donald
