Norway & the Environment: An Introduction - IN-PERSON

NORWAY & THE ENVIRONMENT: AN INTRODUCTION - IN-PERSON

Taught in English, this class will explore how Norway has taken a leading role in shaping environmental policy. From being the first country to establish a Ministry for the Environment in 1972, Norwegian Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland's leadership role in the writing of 'Our Common Future’, the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development Program's flagship report from 1987, as a key player in the establishment of the UN"s Framework Convention on Climate Change and to the building the Global Seed Vault on Svalbard in 2008, Norway has had a high profile on the international environmental arena. How did Norway, a relatively young and small country, take on such a leadership role? What factors were involved? In this course we will attempt to answer these questions through a historical review of key actors and actions, We will culminate with a review of Norway's current environmental positions.
