HØR HER'A

Join our Saturday morning crew for an award-winning new young adult novel from Pakistani-Norwegian author, Gulraiz Sharif.

It’s the summer holidays and 15-year-old Mahmoud pictures long days on the bench outside his block of flats. Norwegian Norwegians go off on their summer holidays, but what do penniless immigrants do?

All the same, though, this summer will be different because the family has a visit from Uncle Ji from Pakistan, and Mahmoud is given the job of showing his uncle around Oslo. Uncle Ji is amazed by Norway and then he starts to wonder what’s wrong with Ali, Mahmoud’s little brother – the one who plays with Elsa dolls and doesn’t behave the way Pakistani boys are supposed to.

Before the summer is over, Mahmoud will be put to the test – both as the son and brother of his Pakistani family.

Along with the novel, we'll work to improve our spoken Norwegian with discussions and in-class reading.

SVØM MED DEM SOM DRUKNER

Join us as we continue reading about 23-year-old Edvard as he tries to untangle the mysteries of his family.  In 1971 when he was three years old, his parents were found dead on a WWI battlefield in France, but Edvard was found four days later in another location.  He grew up with his grandfather in Gudbrandsdal, and now that he's an adult and his grandfather has died, Edvard wants to find out exactly what happened to his parents, what happened during the four days he was missing, and why those things happened.  This class is conducted in Norwegian and includes grammar review for which we use Norsk grammatikk: Norsk som andrespråk, arbeidsbok.

Texts: Svøm med dem som drukner by Lars Mytting and Norsk grammatikk: Norsk som andrespråk, arbeidsbok by Kirsti MacDonald.

UPPER INTERMEDIATE NORWEGIAN 2

This class is designed for students who are comfortable reading and communicating orally in Norwegian at a beginning/lower intermediate level, and who are serious about taking the next step in their Norwegian language learning journey.  Unlike other MNLCP classes, we will use Stein på stein, the primary curriculum used in Norway to build language competency among intermediate learners for whom Norwegian is not a first language, to guide learning.

Through weekly written assignments students will deepen their understanding of essential linguistic and cultural knowledge and also increase skills related to reading, speaking and listening.  Instruction is conducted primarily in Norwegian and will challenge students to demonstrate their learning both orally and through writing. This class is recommended for those who have completed Intermediate Norwegian 5 and above, or the equivalent and who are committed to spending time on their Norwegian studies outside of class.
